Grade 6, 7, 8 Integrated Language Arts

Goals for the Year:

  • To develop lifelong readers and learners
  • To enhance spelling and vocabulary skills
  • To augment writing skills in essays, paragraphs, poems and short stories
  • To increase grammar skills use in written and oral language

Religion:

  • To enable students to make good moral decisions throughout their lives, by teaching and demonstrating Catholic teachings
  • To understand and grow in love with Jesus

Integrated Language Arts
Writing:
Students will learn various styles of writing such as descriptive, expository and narrative. Students improve written skills by using the four square process. They will select a piece of writing which will be submitted for evaluation and are assigned to write one well organized paragraph each week to improve written skills. Students will also have the opportunity to publish their work in The Challenger, our literary publication.

Grammar:
Grammar is taught throughout the year and is integrated in the Reading Series. The students have a Grammar textbook which supplements the program. 6th and 7th graders begin each class with grammar exercises.

Spelling:
Spelling Tests are administered on a weekly basis. Spelling is an important element of our language. Students not only memorize words, but need to understand the rules of our language.

Literature:
SAS uses the Prentice Hall Literature Series, and covers all types of genre. Reading Journals are maintained and evaluated on a regular basis.

Oral Presentations:
Oral Presentations are assigned to improve their public speaking skills. Topics include book talks, poems, and dramas.

 

Grade 6, 7, 8 Math

Goals:

  • To increase Math competency for grades 6, 7, and 8 Math students.
  • To develop enthusiasm for Math.
  • To develop an understanding for Math in the real world.

  • March 14th is Pi Day

Grades 7 and 8 Pre-Algebra/Algebra

Goal:

That students develop a general understanding of the basic principles of Algebra I and the skills to apply these principles.

  • To acquire a basic knowledge of the language of algebra
  • To acquire a working knowledge of algebraic operations and skill in the use of analytical thought
  • To discover the usefulness of algebra in the solution of applied problems

Grade 6, 7, 8 Science

Goals:

  • To develop leadership skills in my students.
  • To develop scientific problem solving using scientific method.
  • To promote Catholic teachings to help students make good life choices.

Science Fair Information
Each student in grades 7-8 will complete an independent Science Fair Project. There will be many steps along the way that will be taught in class and a timeline of assignments will be graded. The 15 -20 most promising projects in grades 7 and 8 will continue at the Lancaster Science and Engineering Fair(LSEF) held in March at Franklin and Marshall College.

Religion -In our confirmation class, students learn about the Church past, present and future, and their role in it. Students plan liturgies and prayer services and choose service projects to share our blessings.

Junior high lives the Jesus Attitude as they:

  • Collect money every month for the Holy Childhood Association.
  • Collect food items for the St. Anne Church "Brown Bag" lunch program.
  • Pray the Rosary for Peace.
  • Collect pennies and baby items for pro-life month.
